Residences

80 King St. Felixstowe
80 King St Felixstowe
It is not known why Imelda QUINN was staying at 80 King Street in Felixstowe in Suffolk when John, her husband, was joining the Royal Australian Navy in 1948.

At that time one Stanley Eric BOND was recorded as living at that address. A researcher from Suffolk, has said that she believes that the BOND family, and there were a number of them living at other addresses in Felixstowe at the time, were members of the Salvation Army.

Jacqueline QUINN

Jacqueline, more commonly known as Jacki, was born about 1953 in Brisbane. She attended All Hallows school in Fortitude Valley and her younger sister Roslyn followed her there a couple of years later.

By 1969 Jacki was doing her apprenticeship as a hairdresser. She was working for a Miss KAY(e) who had a salon on about the fourth floor in a building on the corner of Queen and Edward Streets in Brisbane City on the opposite side of Edward Street to MacArthur Chambers.

Jacki was fond of going to the beach, at Maroochydore on the north coast and at Greenmount and Coolangatta on the south coast.

Jacqueline was a young lady with a natural beauty and very rarely used cosmetics. She didn't eat chocolate and had a good set of moral values, probably instilled in her by her mother, who was of a rather stern nature.

The viewer should not confuse this Jacqueline QUINN with another Jacqueline who married and later divorced a Shane Grimstone. That Jacqueline was from Victoria.

Imelda Mary QUINN

When John Noel QUINN joined the Royal Australian Navy on the 30th of August in 1948, his wife, Mary QUINN, is noted as living at 80 King Street, Walton, Felixstowe in Suffolk, England.

Imelda is recorded on the electoral roll in Queensland as either 'domestic duties' or as a nurse.

When Imelda is first listed on the electoral roll in Queensland in 1952 in the subdivision of Merthyr, her maiden name is noted as EDWARDS.

Imelda is listed at 23 Hazelwood Street, Merthyr in 1952, then at 16 Hunter Street, Southport in 1959, then 150 Moray Street, New Farm in 1963, then sometime before August in 1968 Imelda and her family are living at 5 Sydney Street, New Farm. In 1975 Imelda is listed as living at 12/151 Moray Street, New Farm and her youngest daughter, Roslyn, is listed as living with her in March 1977.

The last time Imelda is listed as living in Moray Street is 1984. In 1997 there is a listing on the electoral roll for an Imelda QUINN at Bindawalla Gardens, Bruce Highway, Burpengary, which is just north of Brisbane. This Imelda continues to be listed there until 2003.

Most recently, there are two listings for two Imelda Mary QUINNs. One is in Stafford Heights and it has been established that this is not Imelda who was married to John Noel QUINN. The other Imelda Mary Quinn is listed as living in Gleneld South which is in South Australia.

John Noel QUINN

John was born on the 25th of December in 1926 in Newcastle-on-Tyne in Northumberland in England.

He served in the Royal Navy from 1944 to 1947 and then for two years in the Royal Australian Navy on the Shropshire.

In the electoral roll for 1959 John was recorded as living in Hunter Street in Southport with Imelda and he was described as a loco cleaner.

The last time he was recorded on the electoral roll in 1980, was at 95 Kennedy Terrace in Paddington and he was listed as a fireman.

Arrival in New Farm

23 Hazelwood Street
The first instance of the QUINN family being in the Brisbane area was when they were recorded as new voters on the electoral roll in the subdivision of Merthyr, which is a small section of the suburb of New Farm, in a bend of the Brisbane River.

The electoral roll was published on the 29th of August 1952 and it records John Noel QUINN and Imelda Mary (whose maiden name was noted as EDWARDS) as living at 23 Hazelwood Street. This is only seven doors away from 5 Sydney Street in New Farm where the family would be living 1969-70.

The QUINN family

There were five members of the QUINN family.

Father was John Noel QUINN and his wife and the mother of three daughters was Imelda Mary QUINN and I think her maiden name was EDWARDS.

I believe the eldest of the three daughters was Pam and I think she would have been born about 1951.

The second daughter was Jacqueline more commonly known as Jacki and the youngest daughter was Roslyn.

In 1969-70 Roslyn was just finishing high school and they were born about two years apart.
